All Machu Picchu tickets are sold exclusively through the official Peruvian government platform. Availability is the same for agencies and individual travelers. If a circuit is sold out on the official system, no agency can access extra spaces.

Trip itinerary

Your Llactapata Trek 3 Days to Machu Picchu begins in Cusco with an early meeting at the Machu Picchu Trip Guide office at 6:30 a.m. Here, you will meet your professional guide and the rest of the group before starting the journey toward the jungle side of Cusco.

Scenic Drive to Santa Teresa

From Cusco, we will travel by tourist transportation toward Santa Teresa. The drive takes approximately 5 hours, passing through beautiful Andean and cloud forest landscapes, traditional villages, mountain valleys, and changing ecosystems as we descend from the highlands into a warmer tropical region.

We expect to arrive in Santa Teresa around 1:00 p.m., where your guide will take you to a local restaurant to enjoy lunch and recharge before the afternoon activities.

Transfer to Lucmabamba

After lunch, we will take a local transport for approximately 30 minutes to Lucmabamba, a peaceful coffee-growing area surrounded by green mountains, plantations, and jungle scenery.

Zipline Adventure in Lucmabamba

In Lucmabamba, you will enjoy an exciting zipline experience, one of the adventure highlights of the tour. This activity includes five zipline cables that connect mountain to mountain, giving you incredible views of the valley and surrounding landscapes.

The experience also includes a thrilling 300-meter Tibetan bridge, suspended nearly 500 meters above the ground, adding even more adrenaline to the day.

The complete zipline activity lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and is safely operated with proper equipment and professional assistance.

Cocalmayo Hot Springs

After the zipline adventure, we will continue by transport for about 30 minutes to the famous Cocalmayo Hot Springs in Santa Teresa.

Here, you will have a couple of hours to relax in the warm thermal pools, surrounded by mountains and tropical vegetation. This is the perfect way to rest your body and enjoy a peaceful moment before the hiking day ahead.

Overnight at the Star Domes

At the end of the day, we will take a 45-minute drive to the Star Domes, your accommodation for the night.

Day 2 of the Llactapata Trek 3 Days to Machu Picchu is the main hiking day of the adventure. This route combines local culture, an original Inca trail, incredible views of Machu Picchu from Llactapata, and a scenic walk through the cloud forest to Aguas Calientes.

Wake-Up and Breakfast

We will start the day early with a wake-up call around 5:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served at approximately 6:00 a.m., giving you the energy needed for the hike ahead.

Coffee Experience in Lucmabamba

After breakfast, you will visit a local family to learn about the traditional coffee production process. Lucmabamba is known for producing some of the best coffee in the Cusco region, thanks to its warm climate, fertile soil, and ideal mountain conditions.

During this 30 to 45-minute coffee tour, you will learn about the cultivation, harvesting, roasting, and preparation of local coffee. You will also enjoy a fresh coffee tasting, making this a great cultural experience before starting the trek.

Hike along the Llactapata Inca Trail

After the coffee experience, we will begin the Llactapata Inca Trail hike, following an original Inca path surrounded by cloud forest, plantations, and mountain landscapes.

The hike covers approximately 12 km and includes around 3 hours of uphill walking. This section is physically rewarding and offers beautiful views as you gain elevation toward the archaeological site.

Visit to Llactapata Inca Ruins

Once we reach the Llactapata Inca ruins, you will be rewarded with one of the most unique views of Machu Picchu from a different angle. From this viewpoint, you can see the citadel, the surrounding mountains, and the impressive landscape that connects Llactapata with Machu Picchu.

Your guide will explain the history and significance of Llactapata, its connection with the Inca road system, and why this site was important for observation, ceremonial use, and communication between Inca settlements.

Descent to Hidroelectrica

Once we arrive in Hidroelectrica, we will stop for a delicious lunch and a well-deserved rest.

Hike from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes

After lunch, we will continue with a mostly flat hike along the train tracks from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes. This walk takes approximately 3 hours and follows a scenic route surrounded by lush vegetation, rivers, mountains, and cloud forest.

This section is one of the most iconic approaches to Machu Picchu, offering a relaxed and beautiful final hike before reaching the base town.

Arrival in Aguas Calientes

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, your guide will take you to your hotel so you can check in, shower, and rest after the day’s hike.

Dinner in Aguas Calientes

Around 7:00 p.m., the group will meet for dinner at a local restaurant. You will enjoy regional cuisine and receive the final instructions for the next day’s visit to Machu Picchu, including entrance time, meeting point, and what to bring.

Final Day: Visit to Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco

The final day of the Llactapata Trek 3 Days to Machu Picchu is the most important part of the journey: your guided visit to the legendary Machu Picchu Citadel. This is the moment where the adventure through Lucmabamba, Llactapata, and the cloud forest reaches its unforgettable highlight.

Your entrance time will depend on the schedule shown on your Machu Picchu ticket, so it is very important to arrive at the main gate at the exact time assigned.

How to Get from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu

From Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, you have two options to reach the main entrance of Machu Picchu.

Option 1: Hike to Machu Picchu

The hike from Aguas Calientes to the Machu Picchu entrance takes approximately 1.5 hours.

First, you will walk about 30 minutes from your hotel to the Puente Ruinas checkpoint, where you must show your passport and Machu Picchu entrance ticket. After passing the checkpoint, you will continue uphill for around 1 hour, climbing approximately 1,700 stone steps through the cloud forest.

If your entrance ticket is for 6:00 a.m., we recommend starting the walk around 4:30 a.m., after breakfast at your hotel.

Option 2: Shuttle Bus to Machu Picchu

If you prefer a more comfortable option, you can take the official shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes to the Machu Picchu entrance.

The bus ride takes approximately 30 minutes and costs $12 USD one way. Tickets can be purchased the night before or early in the morning in Aguas Calientes.

Buses usually start running at 5:30 a.m. and depart every 5 to 10 minutes on a first-come, first-served basis.

No matter which option you choose, the most important thing is to be at the main entrance at the time shown on your ticket.

Guided Tour of Machu Picchu

Once you arrive at the entrance, you will meet your professional guide and group for a guided tour of Machu Picchu, lasting approximately 2 hours.

The tour follows the official circuit assigned to your entrance ticket. During the visit, your guide will explain the history, architecture, sacred temples, agricultural terraces, and spiritual importance of this extraordinary Inca city.

You will also have time to take photos, enjoy the views, and appreciate why Machu Picchu is considered one of the most iconic destinations in the world.

Optional Mountain Hikes

If you booked an additional entrance ticket for Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain, you can begin the hike according to the schedule shown on that ticket.

These hikes usually take around 3 hours round-trip and must be reserved in advance because spaces are limited and availability depends on the official Machu Picchu ticket system.

Return to Cusco

After finishing your activities at Machu Picchu, you will return to Cusco according to the option selected at the time of booking.

Option 1: Return by Train

If you selected the return by train, you will first go back to Aguas Calientes either by walking down for approximately 1.5 hours or by taking the shuttle bus, which takes around 30 minutes and costs $12 USD.

From Aguas Calientes, you will board the train to Ollantaytambo. The train ride takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, our tourist transport will take you back to Cusco, which takes around 2 more hours.

Train departures are usually scheduled between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., depending on availability.

Estimated arrival in Cusco: between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Option 2: Return by Car via Hidroelectrica

If you selected the return by car, you must hike from Machu Picchu back to Hidroelectrica, which takes approximately 3 hours.

You need to arrive at Hidroelectrica by 2:30 p.m., as the only car departure to Cusco leaves at 3:00 p.m.

The drive from Hidroelectrica to Cusco takes around 5 to 6 hours, with estimated arrival in Cusco between 10:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Important Note for Return by Car

This return option only works if your Machu Picchu entrance time is between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

If your ticket is for a later entrance time, you will not have enough time to visit Machu Picchu and reach Hidroelectrica before the car departure. In that case, you will need to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes and return to Cusco the following day.

Any additional costs for accommodation, meals, transportation, or other services will be the responsibility of the traveler.

Pre-Trek Briefing in Cusco

The day before starting the Llactapata Trek 3 Days, you will attend a briefing at the Machu Picchu Trip Guide office in Cusco at 6:00 p.m.

During this meeting, you will meet your guide and the other travelers in your group. Your guide will explain the full itinerary, safety recommendations, technical details of the trek, exact departure time, and important information about your Machu Picchu visit.

At the briefing, you will also receive your Machu Picchu entrance ticket, train ticket if applicable, and your duffle bag for the trek. Please bring your passport for the check-in process.

You can also use this time to pay any pending balance or rent trekking poles if you did not add them during your booking.

Transportation from Cusco to Santa Teresa

Transportation from Cusco to Santa Teresa is included in the tour. You will travel with your group and guide in a comfortable tourist vehicle, departing from the Machu Picchu Trip Guide office.

This transfer is part of the experience and allows you to enjoy the changing landscapes from the Andes to the cloud forest as you make your way toward the beginning of the adventure.

Machu Picchu Entrance Ticket Included

Your Machu Picchu entrance ticket is included in the Llactapata Trek package.

When you book, our team will secure the best available circuit according to official availability. Our first priority is usually Circuit 2-A: Classic Designed Route, which offers access to the iconic panoramic viewpoint and a complete visit through the main areas of the citadel.

If Circuit 2-A is not available, we will try to secure Circuit 2-B: Lower Terrace, another excellent option that also includes the classic Machu Picchu experience.

To increase your chances of getting one of the best circuits, we strongly recommend booking at least 3 to 4 months in advance, especially during high season.

Duffle Bag Service

During the briefing, we will provide you with a duffle bag where you can pack up to 7 kg of personal belongings.

Our team will transport your duffle bag during the trip, so you can hike comfortably with only your daypack. This makes the experience easier and more enjoyable, especially during the hiking sections of the Llactapata route.

At the end of the tour, you can return the duffle bag at the Machu Picchu Trip Guide office.

The first night is spent in the Star Domes, panoramic glass domes designed for a magical stay surrounded by nature and Andean skies. The domes include mattresses, pillows, and sleeping bags.

Each dome is normally arranged for two people, offering comfort and privacy. If you are traveling in a group of three or four and prefer to stay together, this can be arranged upon request.

The second night is spent in comfortable accommodation in Aguas Calientes, the base town for Machu Picchu.

Return Options from Machu Picchu

After your visit to Machu Picchu, you can return to Cusco by train or by car via Hidroelectrica, depending on the option selected when booking.

Return by Train

If you choose the train option, your train usually departs from Aguas Calientes around 2:30 p.m., 2:55 p.m., or 3:20 p.m., depending on availability.

After visiting Machu Picchu, you can return to Aguas Calientes by walking or by bus. The bus costs approximately $12 USD one way.

The train ride to Ollantaytambo takes about 1.5 hours. Once you arrive, a Machu Picchu Trip Guide transfer will be waiting for you with your name. From Ollantaytambo, the drive back to Cusco takes around 2 hours, with drop-off at Plaza Regocijo.

Estimated arrival in Cusco: around 6:30 p.m.

Return by Car via Hidroelectrica

If you choose the car option, you will hike from Machu Picchu to Hidroelectrica. This hike takes around 3 hours and should begin no later than 11:00 a.m.

You must arrive at Hidroelectrica by 2:30 p.m. to catch the car at 3:00 p.m.

The drive back to Cusco takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, with arrival around 10:00 p.m. The final stop is Plaza Regocijo, in the historic center of Cusco.

Free Luggage Storage in Cusco

If you have extra luggage, Machu Picchu Trip Guide offers free storage service for clients who book the tour with us.

You can leave your extra bags at our main office in Cusco before starting the trek. The storage service is available daily from 4:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., including Sundays.

Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are not included in the tour package. If you do not have your own, you can rent a pair from Machu Picchu Trip Guide for the entire trek.

Rental price: $15 USD per pair

Trekking poles are recommended for the hiking sections, especially on uphill and downhill trails, as they help with balance and reduce pressure on the knees.

Santa Teresa Hot Springs Entrance

The entrance ticket to the Santa Teresa Hot Springs is not included in the package.

Entrance fee: 10 soles per person

This payment is made directly at the hot springs. Visiting the thermal baths is optional, but it is a great way to relax after a day of travel and adventure.

Drinking Water for Bottles

Bottle refills are not included during the trek. However, we provide water for hot and cold drinks during meals.

For drinking water during the route, you have two options:

Buy bottled mineral water from small local shops along the trail. Prices usually range from 5 to 12 soles for a 2.5-liter bottle.

Bring a water filter or purification tablets if you prefer to treat mountain water during the trek.

Travel Insurance

Student Price Requirements

Machu Picchu Mountain Entrance – $60 USD

Machu Picchu Mountain is a great alternative for travelers who want a longer and more scenic hike with wide panoramic views. This mountain rises to approximately 3,080 m / 10,105 ft and offers one of the best viewpoints over Machu Picchu, the surrounding valleys, and the final section of the classic Inca Trail.

This is a separate mountain hike from the archaeological citadel and requires an additional entrance ticket. Availability is limited, so booking in advance is highly recommended.

The hike takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours round trip. The trail is wider and less exposed than Waynapicchu, but it still requires a good level of fitness because of the steady uphill climb and many stone steps.

This option is ideal for travelers who want a challenging hike with spectacular views, but prefer a less steep route than Waynapicchu.

Vistadome Train Upgrade – $45 USD

The standard return train included in the tour is usually the Expedition or Voyager train, depending on availability. These trains are comfortable and scenic, making them a great way to return from Machu Picchu.

For a more memorable experience, you can upgrade to the Vistadome panoramic train for an additional $45 USD per person.

Terms and Conditions for Booking

To confirm your Llactapata Trek 3 Days reservation, a non-refundable deposit of $180 USD per person is required.

This deposit secures your spot on the tour and is used to purchase your Machu Picchu entrance ticket, which is issued under your personal information and cannot be modified, transferred, or refunded once purchased.

Cancellation Policy

If you decide to cancel your tour, the $180 USD deposit per person is non-refundable.

However, if your Machu Picchu ticket has already been purchased, you may still use that ticket on the original date for which it was issued. Please note that Machu Picchu tickets cannot be changed, refunded, or transferred to another person.

If you paid the full tour amount and later cancel, you will receive a refund of the remaining balance, excluding the non-refundable $180 USD deposit per person.

Date Changes

You may request a date change as long as there is availability for the new date.

Please note that changing the date requires the purchase of new Machu Picchu entrance tickets and, if applicable, new train tickets. For this reason, a new $180 USD deposit per person will be required to cover the additional reservation costs.

Remaining Balance Payment

If you only paid the deposit at the time of booking, the remaining balance must be paid at least 24 hours before the tour starts.
