Tour overview

The Machu Picchu Tour 2 Days by Train is one of the best options for travelers who want to visit the legendary Inca citadel with more time, comfort, and flexibility than a one-day tour. This experience combines scenic train travel, beautiful Andean landscapes, one night in Aguas Calientes, and a guided visit to Machu Picchu the next day.

On the first day, you will travel from Cusco or the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, the gateway town to Machu Picchu. Along the route, you will enjoy stunning views of the Andes, the Urubamba River, and the cloud forest as you approach one of the most iconic destinations in the world.

After spending the night in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, you will visit Machu Picchu on the second day. This allows you to enjoy the experience with more calm, especially if you want to enter early in the morning, take beautiful photos, or add an optional hike such as Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain, subject to availability.

In the afternoon, you will return by train to Ollantaytambo and continue by private transport back to Cusco, with drop-off at your hotel. This tour is ideal for travelers who want a well-organized, stress-free, and more complete Machu Picchu experience in just two days.

Availability and Booking

Booking the Machu Picchu 2 Days by Train Tour is simple. Click the “BOOK ONLINE” button to access our real-time availability calendar.

If your preferred start date is available, it means there is also availability for the Machu Picchu visit date included in your itinerary. Once your booking is confirmed, our team will purchase your Machu Picchu entrance ticket according to the best available circuit at the time of booking.

Machu Picchu has several official circuits and routes. Availability changes constantly and depends entirely on the official Peruvian government ticket system. All agencies and independent travelers purchase tickets through the same official platform, and no company has access to extra or private ticket quotas.

You can check real-time Machu Picchu ticket availability here:

Machu Picchu Circuit Priority

When we purchase your Machu Picchu entrance ticket, we always choose the best available option based on the following priority order:

Option 1: Circuit 2-A – Classic Designed Route

Llaqta Machupicchu / Circuit 2 – Classic Circuit / Route 2-A: Classic Designed

This is the most complete and requested route. It includes access to the classic viewpoint for the famous Machu Picchu photo and a full guided visit through the main areas of the Inca citadel.

This is our first priority whenever available.

Option 2: Circuit 2-B – Lower Terrace Route

Llaqta Machupicchu / Circuit 2 – Classic Circuit / Route 2-B: Lower Terrace

This route offers a very similar experience to Circuit 2-A. It includes important areas of the citadel and follows a slightly different path through the urban sector of Machu Picchu.

This is also one of the best options for travelers who want a complete Machu Picchu visit.

Option 3: Circuit 1-B – Upper Terrace Route

Llaqta Machupicchu / Circuit 1 – Panoramic Circuit / Route 1-B: Upper Terrace

This route focuses on the upper panoramic area of Machu Picchu and includes access to the classic viewpoint.

It is ideal for travelers who want the iconic photo and wide views of the citadel. Please note that this route does not include a full visit inside the urban area of Machu Picchu.

Option 4: Circuit 3-B – Royalty Designed Route

Llaqta Machupicchu / Circuit 3 – Machu Picchu Royalty / Route 3-B: Royalty Designed

This route visits the lower part of Machu Picchu, including important archaeological areas. It does not include access to the classic upper viewpoint, but it still offers a valuable visit inside the Inca site.

Option 5: Circuit 1-A – Machu Picchu Mountain Route

Llaqta Machupicchu / Circuit 1 – Route 1-A: Machu Picchu Mountain

This ticket includes the hike to Machu Picchu Mountain, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the citadel, the Vilcanota River, and the surrounding mountains.

Please note that this option focuses mainly on the mountain hike and does not include a full visit inside the main citadel.

Option 6: Circuit 3-A – Waynapicchu Mountain Route

Llaqta Machupicchu / Circuit 3 – Route 3-A: Waynapicchu Mountain

This ticket includes the famous Waynapicchu Mountain hike and a short visit through the lower part of Machu Picchu.

This is a great option for travelers looking for a more adventurous experience, but availability is very limited and must be booked in advance.

Important Recommendation

If Circuit 2-A is important to you, we strongly recommend booking at least 4 months in advance, especially during high season. This is the most popular Machu Picchu circuit and usually sells out first.

All Machu Picchu tickets are sold exclusively through the official Peruvian government platform. Availability is the same for agencies and independent travelers. If a circuit is sold out on the official system, no agency can access extra spaces.

What If There Is No Availability or I Already Have a Machu Picchu Ticket?

If there is no availability for your preferred date, or if you already purchased your own Machu Picchu ticket, please contact us before booking.

Our team can help you review the best available options and adjust the itinerary according to your ticket, circuit, and entrance time.

After the guided tour, you may have additional time to explore allowed areas on your own, depending on your ticket circuit and current Machu Picchu regulations.

Later, you will board the return train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. Train departures are usually around 2:30 p.m. or 2:55 p.m., depending on availability.

Travel information

Optional Add-Ons and Prices – Machu Picchu Tour 2 Days by Train

You can personalize your Machu Picchu Tour 2 Days by Train with optional upgrades that make your visit even more special. These add-ons are not included in the standard package and must be requested in advance, especially the mountain entrance tickets, as availability is limited.

Optional Add-On Prices

Waynapicchu Mountain Entrance: $60 USD per person
Machu Picchu Mountain Entrance: $60 USD per person
Vistadome Train Upgrade: $40 USD per person

Waynapicchu Mountain Entrance – $60 USD

Waynapicchu, also known as Huayna Picchu, is the famous mountain that appears behind Machu Picchu in the classic postcard photo. This optional hike is perfect for travelers looking for a more adventurous experience and spectacular panoramic views of the Inca citadel, the Vilcanota River, and the surrounding mountains.

Access to Waynapicchu is limited and must be booked in advance. The trail has specific entrance schedules and availability changes quickly, especially during high season.

The hike takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours round trip. It is steep in some sections and includes narrow paths, so it is not recommended for travelers with vertigo or fear of heights.

You can check real-time availability on the official government website:

https://tuboleto.cultura.pe/llaqta_machupicchu

If you add this option to your booking, Machu Picchu Trip Guide will handle the ticket purchase for you, based on official availability.

Machu Picchu Mountain Entrance – $60 USD

Machu Picchu Mountain is a great alternative for travelers who want a longer scenic hike with wide panoramic views. This mountain rises to approximately 3,080 m / 10,105 ft and offers impressive views of Machu Picchu, the surrounding valleys, the Vilcanota River, and the cloud forest.

This is a separate mountain route from the archaeological citadel and requires an additional entrance ticket.

The hike takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours round trip. The trail is wider and less exposed than Waynapicchu, but it still requires a good level of fitness because of the steady uphill climb and stone steps.

This option is ideal for travelers who want a challenging hike with incredible views, but prefer a less steep route than Waynapicchu.

Vistadome Train Upgrade – $40 USD

The standard return train included in the tour is usually the Expedition or Voyager train, depending on availability. These trains are comfortable and scenic, making them a great option for the journey back from Machu Picchu.

For travelers who want a more memorable return experience, we offer the option to upgrade to the Vistadome panoramic train for an additional $40 USD per person.

The Vistadome train features larger panoramic windows and glass roof sections, allowing you to enjoy better views of the Sacred Valley, mountains, rivers, and Andean landscapes. Depending on the service, it may also include onboard entertainment such as traditional music and dance performances.

This upgrade is perfect if you want a more scenic, comfortable, and special train journey from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo.

Important Note

All optional add-ons are subject to availability and should be requested at the time of booking. Waynapicchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain tickets can sell out quickly, so early booking is strongly recommended, especially during high season.

Packing smart will help you enjoy a comfortable and stress-free Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour by Train. This tour includes train travel, one night in Aguas Calientes, a bus ride to Machu Picchu, and a guided visit through the Inca citadel, so we recommend bringing light and practical items only.

What to Wear for the Tour

Wool Hat or Beanie
Useful for early mornings, cooler temperatures, or windy conditions.

Breathable T-Shirt
Choose a comfortable, moisture-wicking shirt for the daytime walk and Machu Picchu visit.

Lightweight Layer
Bring a fleece or light insulating layer so you can adjust easily as the temperature changes.

Waterproof Jacket or Rain Poncho
A waterproof or water-resistant jacket is ideal. If you do not have one, a rain poncho is a good alternative for unexpected showers.

Comfortable Pants
Wear quick-drying hiking pants or comfortable trousers suitable for walking and changing weather.

Hiking Shoes or Sneakers
Use sturdy shoes with good traction. Machu Picchu has stone paths, stairs, and uneven surfaces that can become slippery when wet.

Sunglasses
Bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and glare.

Gloves
Recommended for cooler mornings or windy weather, especially if your Machu Picchu entrance is early.

What to Bring in Your Daypack

Original Passport
Required for identification and entry to Machu Picchu. The document must match your entrance ticket.

Original Physical Student Card
If you booked with a student discount, bring your original physical student card. Digital cards, screenshots, or copies may not be accepted.

Small Daypack
Bring a comfortable small backpack to carry your essentials during the tour.

Camera or Smartphone
Perfect for capturing the train journey, Aguas Calientes, and the unforgettable views of Machu Picchu.

Water
Bring enough water for the day. We recommend carrying up to 2 liters, and you can purchase additional water along the way if needed.

Snacks
Pack light snacks such as apples, cereal bars, nuts, sweets, or chocolate to keep your energy up during the day.

Sunscreen
The sun can be strong at high altitude, even on cloudy days, so protect your skin.

Mosquito Repellent
Useful in Aguas Calientes and around the warmer, more humid areas near Machu Picchu.

Rain Poncho
A lightweight rain poncho is very useful, especially during the rainy season or when the weather changes unexpectedly.

Cash in Soles
Bring cash in Peruvian soles for meals, extra water, snacks, souvenirs, tips, or personal expenses.

Smart Packing Tip

Pack light and bring only what you really need. A small daypack is enough for the 2-Day Machu Picchu Tour by Train, and it will make your journey more comfortable during the train ride, bus transfers, and visit to Machu Picchu.
