Trekking Pole Rental – $10 USD (Pair)

Trekking poles are highly recommended for the Salkantay Pass Trek, especially on steep ascents and descents. They help improve balance, reduce impact on your knees, and provide extra stability on uneven terrain.

You can rent a pair of professional trekking poles for $10 USD for the entire 2-day trek. You may add this option during your online booking or rent them directly at our office in Cusco before your departure.

Please note that trekking poles are not allowed inside Machu Picchu or on certain restricted areas.

Hiking Boots

Wear sturdy, comfortable hiking boots with good grip and ankle support. The trail includes steep sections and uneven terrain, so proper footwear is essential for safety and comfort.

Daypack

Bring a small backpack (daypack) to carry your daily essentials such as water, snacks, sunscreen, and extra clothing layers.

Water Bottle and Hydration

Stay well hydrated at high altitude. Carry a refillable water bottle or hydration system. You may also bring water purification tablets or a filter for added safety.

Snacks

Pack lightweight, high-energy snacks like granola bars, nuts, trail mix, or fruit to maintain your energy during the hike.

Layered Clothing

Weather in the Andes can change quickly, so dressing in layers is key:

  • Moisture-wicking base layer
  • Warm mid-layer (fleece or similar)
  • Waterproof outer layer (jacket or poncho)

Hat and Sunglasses

Protect yourself from strong high-altitude sun exposure with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protection sunglasses.

Sunscreen

Use high SPF sunscreen and reapply throughout the day to prevent sunburn, especially at higher elevations.

Insect Repellent

Bring insect repellent to stay comfortable and protected during the trek.

Camera or Smartphone

Capture the incredible landscapes of the Andes, including Humantay Lake and Salkantay Mountain.

Cash

Carry some local currency (Peruvian soles) for small expenses such as entrance fees, snacks, or souvenirs along the route.

Personal Medications

Bring any personal medication you may need, along with a small basic first aid kit.

Rain Gear

A lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho is essential in case of sudden rain.

Extra Clothing

Pack an extra change of clothes, including warm layers for the evening at camp.

Trekking Poles

Highly recommended for balance and support, especially during steep ascents and descents.

Personal Essentials

Include items such as gloves, warm socks, headlamp or flashlight, toiletries, and a small towel.

Duffle Bag Provided (Up to 7 kg)

We provide a duffle bag for your personal belongings (up to 7 kg / 15 lbs). This bag will be carried by horses during the trek, allowing you to hike comfortably with just your daypack. You will have access to your duffle bag at each campsite.
