Tour overview

The One-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the ideal option for travelers with limited time who still want to experience the essence of the legendary Inca Trail. This carefully designed route allows you to enjoy a complete trekking and cultural experience in just one day, combining history, nature, and breathtaking views.

This journey follows the final 12 km (7.5 miles) of the famous Inca Trail, leading you through ancient pathways once used by the Incas. Along the way, you will reach the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the original entrance to Machu Picchu, where you will witness one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the citadel. From this privileged viewpoint, you can capture the classic postcard photos of Machu Picchu from above.

It is important to note that, due to current regulations of the archaeological park, this one-day program does not include a guided visit inside the main citadel. Access is limited to the upper terraces, from where you can enjoy the panoramic views. After this experience, you will exit the site and continue your journey to the town of Aguas Calientes before returning to Cusco.

Trip itinerary

Your adventure begins with an early hotel pick-up in Cusco at 4:00 AM, followed by a scenic drive of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to the train station in Ollantaytambo.

From here, you will board the train departing at either 6:10 AM (Expedition) or 6:40 AM (Voyager), enjoying a beautiful journey through the Sacred Valley until reaching Km 104, the official starting point of the One-Day Inca Trail.

Upon arrival, you will meet your guide, pass the control checkpoint, and begin your hike by exploring the archaeological site of Chachabamba, an ancient ceremonial complex surrounded by lush vegetation.

After the visit, you will start a gradual uphill hike lasting approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, following original Inca pathways through cloud forest landscapes rich in flora and fauna. This section leads to the impressive archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, one of the most beautiful and well-preserved sites along the Inca Trail.

Here, you will have time to explore the terraces, temples, and structures with your guide, followed by a packed lunch and a short rest before continuing the journey.

The trek then continues toward the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the original entrance to Machu Picchu. From this privileged viewpoint, you will enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu, one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire experience.

After taking in the views, you will descend toward Machu Picchu, where you will have time to take photos and enjoy a short guided visit of the upper terraces, in accordance with park regulations.

At approximately 5:00 PM, you will take the 30-minute bus ride down to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, you will have time to enjoy dinner before boarding your return train around 6:30 PM.

The train journey back to Ollantaytambo takes approximately 1.5 hours, where our private transfer will be waiting to take you back to Cusco (another 1.5-hour drive), arriving at your hotel around 10:00 PM.
