Tour overview

Our Amazon Tour to the Manu Cultural Zone is an unforgettable 4-day / 3-night adventure that begins early in the morning from Cusco. This journey offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, deep within the extraordinary Manu National Park.

Traveling from the Andes into the heart of the Amazon rainforest, you will experience a dramatic transition of ecosystems while discovering an incredible diversity of wildlife. Along the way, you may encounter iconic species such as the vibrant Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, the elusive Spectacled Bear, and many other animals native to this protected region.

From Puerto de Atalaya, the journey continues by motorized canoe along the Alto Madre de Dios River, leading you deeper into the jungle toward the serene Machuwasi Lake (Cocha Machuwasi). This beautiful oxbow lake is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife, including the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin (Shansho), impressive Capybara (Ronsoco), and numerous bird species that thrive in this unique ecosystem.

One of the most memorable highlights of the tour is the early morning visit to the clay licks, where flocks of colorful parrots and macaws gather to feed on mineral-rich soil. This natural phenomenon creates a vibrant and dynamic spectacle, offering an exceptional opportunity to observe Amazonian wildlife in its purest form.

Throughout the expedition, you will gain a deeper understanding of the Amazon’s flora and fauna, explore diverse ecosystems, and take part in immersive activities such as guided jungle walks. You will also have the opportunity to experience a night walk, where the rainforest reveals a completely different world, allowing you to observe nocturnal species such as frogs, insects, and small mammals that are rarely seen during daylight hours.

This experience is ideal for nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and adventurous travelers seeking a genuine and immersive connection with one of the most fascinating natural environments on the planet.

Trip itinerary

We begin our journey early in the morning with hotel pick-up between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. in Cusco, traveling in comfortable private transportation as we head toward the Amazon basin.

Our first stop will be the fascinating Chullpas de Ninamarca (3,750 m.a.s.l.), an ancient complex of funerary towers built by pre-Incan cultures. This site offers a unique glimpse into Peru’s ancestral past and early burial traditions.

We then continue to the picturesque town of Paucartambo, known for its rich folklore, colonial architecture, and iconic bridge that reflects the region’s deep cultural heritage.

The journey proceeds to the Acjanaco Pass (4,000 m.a.s.l.), the official gateway to the renowned Manu National Park. From this point, we begin our descent into the mystical cloud forest, a lush and humid ecosystem filled with life.

Along the way, we will explore forest trails surrounded by an extraordinary variety of flora, including orchids, heliconias, and ancient ferns. This region is also one of the best places to observe the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviana) performing its unique mating display. With some luck, we may also encounter quetzals, trogons, and even the elusive Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus).

In the afternoon, we arrive at the jungle town of Pilcopata (550 m.a.s.l.), where we will settle into a typical lodge located just outside the village. The lodge offers private rooms, en-suite bathrooms, and hot showers, providing a comfortable and peaceful environment to rest while surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we continue our journey by road for approximately 45 minutes to reach Atalaya Port (490 m.a.s.l.), where we board a motorized boat for a scenic 30-minute ride along the river toward our jungle accommodation.

Upon arrival, we settle into Paititi Lodge, a traditional Amazon lodge surrounded by lush rainforest, offering private rooms, en-suite bathrooms, and showers, providing both comfort and an authentic jungle experience. During the boat ride, there is an excellent opportunity to observe a wide variety of wildlife, including colorful birds, monkeys, and other species along the riverbanks.

After enjoying a freshly prepared Amazonian lunch, we head out in the afternoon to explore the beautiful Machuwasi Lake (Cocha Machuwasi). Here, we will board a traditional catamaran raft to quietly navigate across the calm waters, allowing for close observation of the surrounding wildlife.

During this excursion, you may encounter species such as the fascinating Hoatzin (Ophisthocomus hoazin), monkeys, reptiles, insects, dwarf caimans, and with some luck, the impressive Capybara (Hydrochaerus hydrochaeris), the largest rodent in the world.

As night falls, we offer an optional guided night walk, an excellent opportunity to explore the jungle after dark and observe nocturnal species that become active only at night.

We will spend the night at the lodge, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the rainforest with all essential comforts, including private bathrooms and showers.

Very early in the morning, we board our motorized boat and head along the river to visit a remarkable Parrot Clay Lick, a natural clay wall rich in essential minerals. Here, you will witness an impressive natural spectacle as three to four species of green parrots gather to feed, creating a vibrant display of color and sound in the heart of the Amazon.

After this experience, we return by boat and begin a guided walk through the primary forest, venturing deeper into the jungle until we reach a secluded lagoon known as Cocha Maravilla. From a specially designed observation platform, you will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of wildlife in its natural habitat, including birds, monkeys, small reptiles, dwarf caimans, and numerous insects.

In the afternoon, we return to the lodge to enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch and take time to relax in the peaceful surroundings. As night falls, you will have the option to participate in a guided night walk, offering a unique chance to discover the fascinating nocturnal life of the rainforest.

We will spend the night at the lodge, which features private rooms, bathrooms, and showers, ensuring a comfortable stay while immersed in the natural beauty of the Amazon.

After enjoying a final and delicious breakfast in the heart of the Amazon, we begin our return journey by motorized boat from Paititi Lodge to Atalaya Port, where our private transportation will be waiting.

From there, we continue by road back to Cusco, retracing our route through the enchanting cloud forest. Along the way, you will have one last opportunity to appreciate the lush landscapes and diverse ecosystems of the Manu region, a truly remarkable transition from rainforest to Andean highlands.

We expect to arrive in Cusco between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., marking the end of this unforgettable journey through the Peruvian Amazon — an experience filled with nature, wildlife, and lasting memories.

Comfortable, water-resistant trekking shoes are highly recommended. Rubber boots will also be provided for certain sections of the tour.
