7 LAKES OF AUSANGATE FULL DAY TOUR

Seven Lakes of Ausangate Full-Day Tour

Experience one of the most breathtaking highland adventures in Peru with a full-day journey to the Seven Lakes of Ausangate — a spectacular route surrounded by glaciers, colorful lagoons, and the powerful presence of Ausangate Mountain, one of the most sacred peaks in Andean culture.

Your adventure begins with an early hotel pickup in Cusco, followed by a scenic drive through remote Andean villages, open valleys, and traditional communities. Along the way, you’ll see herds of alpacas and llamas grazing across the highlands, offering an authentic glimpse into daily life in the Andes.

Once you arrive at the starting point, your professional guide will lead you on a scenic hike through a series of stunning glacial lakes. Each lagoon reveals its own unique color — from deep blue and emerald green to bright turquoise — shaped by mineral deposits, altitude, and reflections from the surrounding snow-capped mountains.

As you walk, your guide will share the stories behind the landscape, including the area’s geology, local traditions, and the spiritual importance of Ausangate in Andean beliefs. This is more than just a hike; it’s a journey through a sacred natural setting where culture and nature come together.

Perfect for travelers looking for adventure, fresh mountain air, fewer crowds, and unforgettable scenery, the Seven Lakes of Ausangate tour offers a powerful connection with the wild beauty of the Peruvian Andes.

At the end of the day, you’ll return to Cusco with incredible photos, a deeper appreciation for Andean culture, and memories of one of Peru’s most magical landscapes.

Trip itinerary

Hotel Pickup in Cusco

Your adventure begins with an early hotel pickup in Cusco between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. From there, you’ll travel comfortably toward the remote Andean highlands, leaving the city behind as the scenery gradually changes into open valleys, mountain roads, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes.

Scenic Drive to Pacchanta

The journey to Pacchanta, the village located at the base of the majestic Ausangate Mountain, takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast while taking in your first views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks.

Hike to the First Lake

After breakfast, the guided hike begins with a gradual uphill walk of around 1.5 hours to reach the first glacial lake. This section is the most demanding part of the route, but it also offers a beautiful introduction to the wild landscapes and high-altitude environment of Ausangate.

Explore the Seven Lakes

Once you reach the first lake, the trail becomes more relaxed. The remaining lagoons are connected by mostly flat or gently downhill paths, making the experience more enjoyable and accessible.

Each lake offers its own unique beauty, with colors ranging from deep blue and turquoise to emerald green, shaped by minerals, glacial meltwater, and reflections from the surrounding mountains.

Along the way, your guide will share insights about the area’s geology, glaciers, local traditions, and the spiritual importance of Ausangate, one of the most sacred mountains in Andean culture. You’ll also have plenty of time to take photos and enjoy panoramic views of this breathtaking landscape.

Lunch and Hot Springs in Pacchanta

After completing the hike, you’ll return to Pacchanta, where a delicious lunch will be waiting. Afterward, you’ll have time to relax in the natural hot springs, surrounded by spectacular mountain views — the perfect reward after a day of hiking.

Return to Cusco

In the afternoon, you’ll begin the return journey to Cusco. Arrival is expected around 7:00 p.m., ending a full day of adventure, culture, and unforgettable scenery in one of the most authentic regions of the Peruvian Andes.

Important Note

The itinerary may vary slightly depending on weather conditions, road conditions, and the pace of the group.

Travel information

The Ausangate 7 Lakes tour takes place in the high Andes, near Ausangate Mountain, where weather conditions can change rapidly and temperatures vary significantly throughout the day. Dressing properly is essential to stay comfortable, safe, and fully enjoy the experience.

Dress in Layers
Temperatures can shift from cold early mornings to warmer midday conditions. Wear multiple layers that you can easily add or remove as needed.

Comfortable Pants
Opt for lightweight, flexible, and quick-drying pants such as trekking pants or leggings. Avoid jeans, as they are heavy and retain moisture.

Proper Footwear
Wear sturdy hiking boots or trekking shoes with good grip and ankle support. Uneven and sometimes slippery terrain makes proper footwear essential. Avoid sandals or casual shoes.

Accessories
Bring a hat or beanie, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from strong sun exposure at high altitude. Gloves and a neck buff or scarf are recommended, especially during the early hours.

Backpack
Carry a comfortable daypack to store your water, snacks, and extra layers. A well-fitted backpack helps distribute weight evenly and reduces fatigue during the hike.

Sunscreen and Sunglasses
UV radiation is stronger at high altitude. Use high-SPF sunscreen and wear UV-protection sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Snacks and Water
There are no vendors along the trail, so bring sufficient water and energy-rich snacks to stay hydrated and maintain your energy levels.

Final Recommendation
Choose practical, durable, and breathable clothing, and always be prepared for changing weather conditions. Proper gear will significantly enhance your experience in the Andean highlands.
