Day 1: Cusco – Sacred Valley – Abra Málaga – Downhill Biking – Huamanmarca – Santa María

Your Inca Jungle Trail 4 Days to Machu Picchu begins with an early hotel pick-up in Cusco around 6:00 a.m. From there, we will start a scenic journey through the impressive Sacred Valley of the Incas, surrounded by Andean villages, agricultural fields, and breathtaking mountain views.

Along the way, you will enjoy beautiful landscapes of the Vilcabamba and Vilcanota mountain ranges, as well as charming towns that show the traditional side of the Sacred Valley.

Breakfast Stop in Ollantaytambo

After approximately 2 hours by car, we will arrive in the ancient Inca town of Ollantaytambo, where you will enjoy an included breakfast.

This is also a good moment to stretch your legs, use the restroom, and enjoy the atmosphere of one of the most important living Inca towns in Peru.

After breakfast, we continue the drive toward Abra Málaga Pass, located at 4,350 m / 14,271 ft above sea level.

This high mountain pass marks the starting point of your downhill biking adventure. Before beginning, your guide will provide the necessary biking equipment and a safety briefing so you feel confident and prepared for the ride.

Downhill Biking to Santa María

From Abra Málaga, we begin an exciting downhill biking route toward the warmer jungle town of Santa María, located at 1,430 m / 4,691 ft.

The biking route covers approximately 65 km and takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on the pace of the group. Along the way, you will enjoy dramatic changes in scenery as the route descends from the high Andes into the cloud forest.

You will also have incredible views of the snow-capped Veronica Mountain, waterfalls, valleys, and lush green landscapes.

A support vehicle will accompany the group during the activity for safety and assistance.

Huamanmarca Inca Site and Lunch

During the route, we will stop at Huamanmarca, a small but fascinating Inca archaeological site.

Here, your guide will explain the importance of the ruins, and you will have time to explore before enjoying a well-deserved lunch.

Whitewater Rafting in Santa María

Breakfast in Santa María

We will begin the day with a hearty breakfast at a local restaurant around 6:00 a.m. This meal will give you the energy needed for a full day of hiking through the jungle side of Cusco.

Hike toward the Original Inca Trail

After breakfast, we will start with an easy 45-minute walk along a local road before entering a section of the original Inca Trail.

This ancient path once connected Machu Picchu with Vilcabamba, known as the last capital of the Incas. Walking this route is a special opportunity to experience a less-crowded Inca trail surrounded by history, nature, and local culture.

Hiking through Jungle Plantations and Andean Views

We will hike for approximately 3 hours along the original Inca trail, enjoying magnificent views of the Vilcanota Valley and the surrounding hills covered with tropical vegetation.

Along the route, you will see local plantations of bananas, coca, yucca, coffee, and other regional crops. Your guide will share information about the local agriculture, the history of the trail, and the connection between the Andes and the jungle.

Lunch in Quellomayo

Hike along the Vilcanota River

Relax at Colcamayo Hot Springs

After a full day of hiking, we will arrive at the famous Colcamayo Hot Springs, a natural outdoor thermal complex surrounded by mountains and tropical scenery.

Here, you will have a couple of hours to relax in the warm mineral pools, soothe your muscles, and enjoy one of the most pleasant moments of the day.

This stage of the Inca Jungle Trail 4 Days to Machu Picchu combines an optional adventure activity with a final approach to Aguas Calientes.

The day begins at approximately 6:30 AM with breakfast, followed by preparation for scheduled activities. At around 8:00 AM, participants are transferred to the zipline base in the Santa Teresa area. A safety briefing and equipment distribution are conducted prior to the activity.

The zipline experience lasts approximately 2 hours and includes multiple lines and a suspension bridge, with views of the surrounding valley and tropical landscape.

After the activity, transportation continues by vehicle for approximately 1 hour to Hidroeléctrica. Lunch is provided at a local restaurant.

Following lunch, participants begin a 3 to 3.5-hour walk along the railway line to Aguas Calientes. This section covers approximately 11 km on mostly flat terrain, following the Vilcanota River through a subtropical environment.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, participants check into their hotel. Time is allocated for rest and personal use.

Dinner is scheduled at approximately 7:00 PM. During this time, the guide provides instructions and logistical details for the visit to Machu Picchu on the following day.

Day 3 Summary

This day combines transportation, optional activities, and a final approach to the Machu Picchu access point.

Start your final day early with breakfast at your hotel in Aguas Calientes around 4:00 a.m. After breakfast, you will make your way to the main entrance of Machu Picchu, where your guide and group will meet you before beginning the visit.

To reach the entrance, you have two options: you can either hike from Aguas Calientes or take the official shuttle bus. You can decide which option works best for you, even the day before your visit.

If you choose to walk to Machu Picchu, you should leave Aguas Calientes around 4:30 a.m. First, you will walk about 30 minutes to the Puente Ruinas checkpoint, where you must show your Machu Picchu ticket and original passport.

After passing the checkpoint, you will continue with an uphill hike to the main entrance of Machu Picchu. This section includes approximately 1,700 steps and usually takes between 1 hour and 1 hour 20 minutes.

If you prefer a more comfortable option, you can take the bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. The one-way bus ticket costs $12 USD and can be purchased in town the night before or early the same morning.

The first buses usually depart at 5:30 a.m., and the ride takes around 30 minutes to reach the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Once you arrive at the main gate, you will meet your guide and group to begin your guided tour of the Inca citadel.

Your Machu Picchu entrance ticket is included in the program. We usually prioritize Circuit 1 or Circuit 2, depending on availability at the time of booking. If those circuits are not available, we will select the best available alternative, such as Circuit 3 or Circuit 4.

Your professional guide will lead you through Machu Picchu for approximately 2.5 hours, following the route assigned on your ticket. During the visit, you will learn about the history, architecture, temples, terraces, and spiritual importance of this incredible Inca city.

There will also be time to take photos, enjoy the views, and appreciate the magic of one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world.

After the guided tour, you may have some free time to explore allowed areas on your own, depending on your assigned circuit and official regulations.

If you booked Huayna Picchu Mountain in advance, your guide will show you where to begin the hike. This optional mountain hike costs $60 USD per person and usually takes around 2 hours round trip.

You may also choose Machu Picchu Mountain as an optional hike. This route is more challenging and usually takes at least 3 hours round trip. The additional cost is also $60 USD per person.

If you plan to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, we recommend choosing the return by train, as it gives you more time to enjoy the mountain hike without rushing.

After visiting Machu Picchu, you will return to Cusco according to the return option selected when booking: by car or by train.

If you choose to return by car, you must start walking from Machu Picchu toward Hidroelectrica around 10:30 a.m. This hike takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours.

You must arrive at Hidroelectrica by 2:00 p.m. to board the return car, which usually departs around 2:30 p.m.

The drive from Hidroelectrica to Cusco takes around 6 hours, with estimated arrival in Cusco around 9:30 p.m. Drop-off will be in the city center.

If you choose to return by train, you will first return to Aguas Calientes. You can walk down from Machu Picchu for about 1.5 hours or take the bus, which takes 30 minutes and costs $12 USD.

Once in Aguas Calientes, you will have time to enjoy lunch, explore the town, and collect your belongings from the hotel before going to the train station.

The return train to Ollantaytambo usually departs around 2:30 p.m. or 2:55 p.m., depending on availability. The train ride takes approximately 1.5 hours and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, a transfer arranged by Machu Picchu Trip Guide will be waiting for you with your name. From there, you will travel back to Cusco by car, which takes around 2 hours.

Return Options from Machu Picchu

Return by Train

If you choose the train option, your train ticket is usually scheduled for 2:30 p.m., 2:55 p.m., or 3:20 p.m., depending on availability.

After visiting Machu Picchu, you will return to Aguas Calientes either by walking for about 1 hour or by taking the bus for $12 USD.

You will have time to explore the town, enjoy lunch, and arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure.

The train ride to Ollantaytambo takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once you arrive, a Machu Picchu Trip Guide transfer will be waiting with your name to take you back to Cusco. The drive takes around 2 hours, with drop-off at Plaza Regocijo.

Estimated arrival in Cusco: around 6:30 p.m.

Return by Car

If you choose the car option, you must start the walk from Machu Picchu to Hidroelectrica no later than 11:00 a.m.

The walk takes around 3 hours and includes a 30 to 40-minute descent, followed by approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of flat walking along the train tracks.

You must arrive at Hidroelectrica by 2:30 p.m. to take the return car at 3:00 p.m.

The drive back to Cusco takes around 6 to 7 hours, with estimated arrival at approximately 10:00 p.m. The final stop is Plaza Regocijo, in Cusco’s historic center.

Vegetarian, Vegan, and Special Diet Options

Return by Train

The train option is ideal for travelers who prefer a more comfortable and faster return after visiting Machu Picchu.

After your Machu Picchu tour, you will return to Aguas Calientes and take the train to Ollantaytambo. Train departures are usually between 2:30 p.m. and 3:20 p.m., depending on availability.

The train ride takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once you arrive in Ollantaytambo, our transport will take you back to Cusco, which takes around 2 more hours.

Return by Car via Hidroelectrica

The car option is more economical, but it requires more walking and a stricter schedule.

After visiting Machu Picchu, you must start the hike back to Hidroelectrica no later than 11:00 a.m. The walk takes approximately 3 hours.

You must arrive at Hidroelectrica by 2:30 p.m. to take the car departure at 3:00 p.m.

The drive from Hidroelectrica to Cusco takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.
