Tour overview

Salkantay Trek 4 Days – The Ultimate Adventure to Machu Picchu

The Salkantay Trek 4 Days is one of the most complete and rewarding adventures for travelers who want to experience the best of the Andes on the way to Machu Picchu.

This journey combines high mountain landscapes, turquoise lakes, cloud forest, local culture, and unforgettable views. Along the route, you will visit the stunning Humantay Lake, get close to the majestic Salkantay Mountain, and continue through the beautiful Lucmabamba Valley, where you can experience a traditional coffee farm and learn about the local coffee-making process.

To make the adventure even more memorable, you will also have the option to enjoy exciting activities such as ziplining and a full coffee tour experience. The journey ends near the legendary Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

We offer special rates for students and adults, as well as flexible return options depending on your travel plans. This trek is designed for travelers looking for adventure, nature, culture, and a truly unforgettable route to Machu Picchu.

You can easily book the Salkantay Trek 4 Days online through our website by clicking the “Book Online” button. This will take you directly to our availability calendar, where you can choose your preferred departure date.

Important Notice

This tour does not include the Machu Picchu entrance ticket or return transportation to Cusco.

Due to extremely high demand, Machu Picchu tickets are currently sold out in advance for the available trek dates. Only a limited number of tickets are released online each day, divided among different circuits and entry times.

For this reason, many travelers are unable to secure their ticket before starting the trek. However, there is an alternative option available in Machu Picchu Pueblo, also known as Aguas Calientes.

The local authorities are authorized to sell 1,000 additional Machu Picchu tickets per day, but these tickets are sold in person only. They cannot be purchased online or reserved in advance, and they are available only for the following day.

How This Alternative Works

During the trek, you will arrive in Machu Picchu Pueblo / Aguas Calientes in the afternoon, usually around 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Once you arrive, your first priority should be to go directly to the local ticket office and register for one of the additional Machu Picchu tickets for the next day.

If you are among the first available spots, you may be able to purchase your ticket that same afternoon. If not, you may be assigned a place for the following day.

Please note that these tickets are subject to availability. The circuit and entry time are assigned according to what is available at the moment of purchase. You will only know your confirmed circuit and schedule once the ticket is issued.

Planning Your Return to Cusco

Once you have your Machu Picchu ticket and know your entry time, you can organize your return to Cusco in one of two ways:

Option 1: Return by Train

Returning by train is the most comfortable and flexible option.

Train tickets usually cost between US$ 60 and US$ 90, depending on availability, departure time, and service type, such as Expedition, Voyager, or Vistadome.

You can purchase train tickets directly through the official train companies:

  • PeruRail
  • Inca Rail

Both companies offer several daily departures from Machu Picchu Pueblo to Ollantaytambo, with connecting transportation options to Cusco. This makes it easier to choose a return schedule once you know your Machu Picchu entry time.

Option 2: Return by Car via Hidroelectrica

This is the more adventurous and budget-friendly option, but it requires careful timing.

To return by car, you must first walk from Machu Picchu Pueblo to Hidroelectrica, which takes approximately 3 hours and covers about 10 km.

From Hidroelectrica, there is only one daily transport departure to Cusco, usually at 2:30 p.m. The drive back to Cusco takes around 6 hours.

This option works best if your Machu Picchu entrance is early in the morning, usually between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. In that case, you should have enough time to complete your visit, walk to Hidroelectrica, and catch the 2:30 p.m. transport.

However, if your Machu Picchu entry time is later in the day, you will likely need to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes and return to Cusco the following day.

Final Recommendation

This version of the Salkantay Trek is ideal for flexible travelers who still want to enjoy the adventure even when advance Machu Picchu tickets are sold out.

It offers an incredible route through the Andes, with the possibility of purchasing your Machu Picchu ticket in person once you arrive in Aguas Calientes. While the ticket process requires flexibility and patience, the experience can still be an unforgettable journey to one of the most iconic destinations in the world.

Trip itinerary

Your Salkantay adventure begins early with hotel pickup in Cusco between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. Once the group is ready, you’ll leave the city around 5:15 a.m. and travel by private transport toward Mollepata, a scenic drive of approximately 2 hours through the Andean countryside.

Upon arrival in Mollepata, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast at a local restaurant, included in the tour. You’ll also have a short time to buy any last-minute essentials before continuing the journey.

After breakfast, the drive continues for about 1 more hour to Soraypampa, the official starting point of the trek. Here, you’ll meet the muleteers and horses who will support the expedition. Your duffle bags and main equipment will be handed over to the team, allowing you to hike with only your daypack.

From Soraypampa, the hike begins toward the stunning Humantay Lake, starting at approximately 3,900 meters and reaching the lake at around 4,200 meters. The walk takes about 2 hours, beginning with a steady uphill section and finishing with a steeper final climb.

Once you arrive at Humantay Lake, you’ll have time to enjoy the incredible turquoise waters, take photos, rest, and listen to your guide’s explanation about the landscape, local traditions, and the surrounding mountains. Depending on the weather, you’ll spend around 1 to 1.5 hours at the lake.

After this unforgettable visit, you’ll begin the descent toward Quiswarniyoc Camp. The walk takes approximately 1 hour downhill, followed by around 45 minutes on a gentler, flatter trail.

You’ll arrive at camp around 2:00 p.m., where the cooking team will welcome you with a delicious freshly prepared lunch. After lunch, your guide will show you to your Mountain Sky Hut, where you can rest and settle in.

The afternoon is yours to relax, explore the peaceful campsite area, or take short walks while enjoying impressive views of Salkantay Mountain, standing majestically in front of the camp.

Around 6:00 p.m., dinner will be served. Afterward, your guide will provide a short briefing about Day 2, the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek, when you’ll reach the highest point of the route.

Day 1 Details

  • Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Accommodation: Mountain Sky Hut
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Hiking Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
  • Estimated Hiking Time: 5 to 6 hours
  • Camp Elevation: 4,000 m / 13,123 ft
  • Weather Note: Nights can be very cold and windy during the dry season, especially from May to August, with temperatures possibly dropping to -5°C / 23°F.

Important Note

Day 1 is the perfect introduction to the Salkantay Trek. It helps you adjust to the altitude, warm up your body, and prepare mentally for Day 2 — the most demanding but also one of the most spectacular parts of the entire adventure.

Day 2 is the most challenging and spectacular day of the Salkantay Trek — the day you reach the highest point of the entire route and witness some of the most impressive mountain scenery in the Andes.

Your morning begins around 5:00 a.m., when the kitchen team brings you a warm cup of coca tea, traditionally known as “te despierto”. This comforting drink helps you wake up gently and supports acclimatization before the big climb ahead.

After about 30 minutes to get ready and pack your belongings, breakfast will be served at approximately 5:30 a.m. Once you’ve fueled up, you’ll do a final backpack check and prepare to begin the ascent.

The hike starts around 6:00 a.m., heading from Quiswarniyoc Camp toward the legendary Salkantay Pass, located at 4,700 meters / 15,420 feet. The uphill section takes around 3 to 3.5 hours at a steady pace, with regular breaks along the way to rest, hydrate, and take in the incredible views.

Reaching the Salkantay Pass is one of the most powerful moments of the trek. From here, you’ll feel incredibly close to the majestic Salkantay Mountain, surrounded by glaciers, dramatic peaks, and wide-open Andean landscapes. Your guide will share stories about the area and may lead a traditional offering ceremony to honor the Apus, the sacred mountain spirits in Andean culture.

You’ll spend around 30 to 45 minutes at the pass, giving you time to take photos, enjoy the scenery, and celebrate this unforgettable achievement.

Afterward, you’ll begin a 2-hour descent toward Wayracmachay, where the cooking team will be waiting with a nutritious and well-deserved lunch. Weather permitting, you’ll have time to rest before continuing the journey.

The afternoon section takes you from the high Andes down toward the edge of the cloud forest. This final descent to Chawllay Camp takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. The trail can be a bit steep in sections, but the scenery is incredible as the landscape transforms from cold mountain terrain into warmer, greener Amazonian valleys.

Upon arrival at Chawllay, located at 2,900 meters / 9,514 feet, your guide will show you to your accommodation so you can rest after a long and rewarding day. In the evening, the cooking team will prepare a warm dinner, and you’ll have time to relax and recover.

Day 2 Details

  • Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Accommodation: Mountain Sky Hut
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Highest Point: Salkantay Pass – 4,700 m / 15,420 ft
  • Hiking Distance: 22 km / 14 miles
  • Estimated Hiking Time: 9 to 10 hours
  • Camp Elevation: 2,900 m / 9,514 ft
  • Weather Note: Expect colder conditions at high altitude and warmer temperatures as you descend toward lower elevations.

Important Note

Day 2 is considered the hardest day of the entire Salkantay Trek, mainly because of the altitude and the long distance. However, it is also one of the most beautiful and rewarding days, offering unforgettable views of Salkantay Mountain, glaciers, valleys, and the dramatic transition from the Andes toward the Amazon region.

Day 3 offers a beautiful change of scenery as the trek leaves the high Andes behind and enters the warmer, greener landscapes of the Amazonian cloud forest.

Your morning begins around 5:30 a.m. with a warm wake-up tea served by the kitchen team. After packing your belongings and preparing for the day, breakfast will be served at approximately 6:00 a.m.

The hike starts around 6:30 a.m. from Chawllay, following the trail toward Lucmabamba. This section takes around 4 hours and is considered one of the easier and more relaxed parts of the trek. The route passes through the beautiful Santa Teresa Valley, where you’ll notice a dramatic change in climate, vegetation, and scenery.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of lush landscapes, tropical plants, fruit trees, and local farms. This is the perfect opportunity to experience the Amazonian side of the Salkantay route. Upon arrival in Lucmabamba, you’ll enjoy a special coffee tour experience, where you can learn about traditional coffee production and taste locally grown coffee.

Afterward, the journey continues toward Hidroelectrica, where you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant.

From Hidroelectrica, the priority will be reaching Machu Picchu Pueblo, also known as Aguas Calientes, as soon as possible in order to register for the in-person Machu Picchu ticket sale. Once you arrive in town, you will need to wait until a number is assigned for the following day’s ticket process.

If you are among the first available spots, you may be able to purchase your Machu Picchu entrance ticket for the next day. Your guide will assist you throughout the entire process, explaining each step clearly and helping coordinate the best plan according to the situation on the ground.

Once the ticket process is completed, you’ll continue with the evening schedule, including hotel check-in and dinner in Aguas Calientes.

Important Note About the Itinerary

The Day 3 itinerary may be adjusted depending on the urgency of reaching Aguas Calientes to secure Machu Picchu entrance tickets.

In some cases, the Llactapata hike may be skipped in order to arrive earlier in town and improve the chances of obtaining a ticket. These decisions are made directly with your guide during the trek, based on real-time information about ticket availability and the number of travelers already waiting in Aguas Calientes.

Day 3 Details

  • Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Aguas Calientes
  • Difficulty: Easy day hike
  • Hiking Distance: 15 km / 10 miles
  • Estimated Hiking Time: 4 to 5 hours
  • Altitude: Around 2,000 m / 6,562 ft
  • Weather: Hot and humid during the day, cooler at night

Additional Highlight

Day 3 is a more relaxed and scenic part of the Salkantay Trek, offering a beautiful transition into the Amazonian region. With lush valleys, local farms, coffee culture, and the final approach to Machu Picchu Pueblo, this day combines nature, culture, and the excitement of getting closer to the legendary citadel.

This day is dedicated to visiting the legendary Machu Picchu, as long as you were able to secure an entrance ticket in Aguas Calientes.

Once you have your ticket, the most important detail is to arrive at the main entrance of Machu Picchu exactly at the time shown on your ticket. Entry times are strict, so good timing is essential.

To reach Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes, you have two options:

  • By bus: Around 30 minutes, with an approximate cost of US$ 12.00 one way
  • On foot: Around 1 hour and 30 minutes uphill

A guide is not mandatory to enter Machu Picchu, so you may explore the site on your own if you prefer. However, if you would like a guided experience, you can easily hire a professional guide either at the bus station in Aguas Calientes or at the entrance to the archaeological site.

Your visit inside Machu Picchu may last up to 3 hours, depending on the circuit assigned to your ticket. Each circuit offers a different route through the citadel, but all provide a unique opportunity to experience one of the most iconic archaeological wonders in the world.

After your visit, you’ll return to Machu Picchu Pueblo / Aguas Calientes to organize your return to Cusco, either by train or by car, depending on your chosen travel plan.

Important Note

If you are not able to purchase a Machu Picchu entrance ticket for this day, you may need to spend one extra night in Aguas Calientes and visit Machu Picchu the following day. This option requires flexibility, but it gives you another opportunity to access the citadel and complete your experience.

Optional Gear Rental for the Salkantay Trek

Make your trek more comfortable with optional equipment rentals available before departure.

Rental Prices

  • Trekking Poles – One Pair: US$ 10.00
  • Sleeping Bag: US$ 10.00

Trekking Poles Rental

Trekking poles are highly recommended for the Salkantay Trek, especially because the route includes long hiking days, steep climbs, and extended downhill sections.

They are especially useful on Day 2, when you descend from Salkantay Pass at 4,700 m to the second campsite at 2,900 m, passing through dirt paths, gravel, rocks, and uneven terrain.

If you don’t have your own poles, you can rent a pair of professional adjustable trekking poles from Machu Picchu Trip Guide for US$ 10.00 for the entire trek.

These poles help:

  • Improve balance on uneven terrain
  • Reduce pressure on your knees during descents
  • Provide extra support on steep sections
  • Make long-distance hiking more comfortable

They are not mandatory, especially if you are in good physical condition, but they can make a big difference in your overall trekking experience.

You can add trekking poles when booking your tour or rent them directly at the Machu Picchu Trip Guide office in Cusco before your trek begins.

Sleeping Bag Rental

If you don’t have a proper sleeping bag for mountain conditions, you can rent one from Machu Picchu Trip Guide for US$ 10.00 for the entire trek.

Our sleeping bags are designed for the cold temperatures of the Salkantay route and can handle temperatures down to -10°C. They also include an extra liner for added warmth and comfort.

A good sleeping bag is especially important during the colder nights at high-altitude camps, helping you rest properly and recover for the next day’s hike.

You can reserve your sleeping bag in advance when booking your package or rent it upon arrival in Cusco at our office.

For Machu Picchu, bags larger than 25 liters are not allowed inside. Larger bags must be stored outside the entrance, so a small daypack is best.

  • Water
Carry enough for the day, especially for the morning hike.
  • Rain gear and fleece
Keep these accessible so you can adapt quickly to changing weather.
  • Camera or phone
You’ll want to capture the landscapes, camps, and Machu Picchu.
  • Music or headphones
Optional, but useful for relaxing during downtime.
  • Hand sanitizer
    Keep it easy to reach.
  • Toilet paper and small plastic bag
Useful for personal hygiene and responsible waste management.
  • Extra cash
Bring money for snacks, drinks, hot showers, Wi-Fi, optional activities, and tips.
  • Earplugs
Helpful for sleeping more comfortably at camp.

Important Packing Tips

  • Waterproof your belongings
Use dry bags or plastic bags to protect clothes and electronics from rain and humidity.
  • Prioritize comfort
Wear well-fitted, broken-in hiking boots to reduce the risk of blisters.
  • Stay organized
Pack items in separate bags or compartments so you can find what you need quickly.
  • Avoid overpacking
Remember that the duffle bag limit is 7 kg, so bring only what you truly need.

With the right gear, your Salkantay Trek will be much more comfortable, safe, and enjoyable from the first day to the final arrival at Machu Picchu.
